The first Test between India and Bangladesh is stirring up quite the debate, particularly around the Indian team’s unexpected selection decisions. The exclusion of star spinner Kuldeep Yadav from India playing XI has surprised many cricket enthusiasts, sparking discussions about the strategic gamble India is taking.
IND vs BAN: Why is Kuldeep Yadav not Playing 1st Test?
While the MA Chidambaram Stadium, or Chepauk, in Chennai is typically known as a spin-friendly venue, reports suggest that conditions this time might be very different. Chepauk has traditionally been a paradise for spinners, offering turn and grip that has historically made life difficult for opposition batters. However, this Test pitch brings a twist. The stadium boasts nine pitches, three of which are composed of red soil brought in from Mumbai, while the rest are black soil.
The pitch for the upcoming match is made of red soil, known for providing consistent bounce and carry throughout the match. Unlike black soil surfaces, which tend to dry out and favor spinners early, red soil retains its bounce, aiding both pace bowlers and batsmen who prefer lively surfaces.
Rohit Sharma at toss: I would have done that as well (bowl first). Little soft, the pitch. It’s going to be challenging conditions. We have prepared well, so we should back our potential and play the way we know. Looking at the 10 Test matches, every match is important. But we want to focus on what lies in front of us. We came here a week back, we had a good prep leading up to this one. We feel confident. Three seamers and two spinners – Bumrah, Akash Deep, Siraj, Ashwin and Jadeja.
With this in mind, the Indian team management, led by skipper Rohit Sharma and coach Gautam Gambhir, appears to be recalibrating its traditional spin-heavy strategy. Instead of packing the team with spinners like Kuldeep Yadav, India is seriously considering fielding three pacers—a rarity in Indian home Tests, particularly at Chepauk.

The shift in pitch conditions has heavily influenced the team’s selection strategy. Given that the surface is expected to assist fast bowlers, especially in the initial phases of the game, the Indian think-tank has decided to lean towards a pace-dominated attack. This has led to the selection of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Akash Deep, potentially relegating spin bowlers like Kuldeep Yadav to the bench.
This move is significant as India hasn’t played three seamers in a home Test since the 2019 Kolkata Day-Night match against Bangladesh. The decision to pack the pace attack not only indicates a change in the team’s approach for this specific match but could also be a rehearsal for the upcoming tour of Australia, where bouncy wickets are a norm.
