What Does the Vice President of India Do?
The Vice President of India has an important role in helping the President and making sure that things run smoothly in the government. Let’s break down what the Vice President does in simple terms.
The Vice President’s Job in Parliament
After being elected, the Vice President takes charge of a part of Parliament called the Rajya Sabha. Here, the Vice President is like a chairperson, leading meetings and making sure everyone follows the rules, similar to what the Speaker does in the Lok Sabha (the other house of Parliament). However, the Vice President doesn’t get to vote in Rajya Sabha, unless there is a tie, where they can cast a vote to break it.
Acting as President
If the President of India is not able to do their job because of sickness or some other reason, the Vice President steps in and acts as the President. This can only last for about six months, until a new President is elected. While acting as President, the Vice President has the same powers as the President.
No Regular Voting Rights
The Vice President is not a regular member of the Rajya Sabha, so they don’t vote in everyday matters. However, they have the power to cast a vote only when there’s a tie in decisions made by the Rajya Sabha.
What Happens When the Vice President Becomes Acting President?
If the Vice President becomes the acting President, they will stop leading the Rajya Sabha while taking over the President’s duties.
Who Can Become the Vice President of India?
Not just anyone can be the Vice President! There are some important rules a person has to follow:
- They must be an Indian citizen.
- They should be at least 35 years old.
- They must be eligible to become a member of the Rajya Sabha, but they can’t already be a member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha or Lok Sabha).
- They can’t hold a job that earns them money from the government while serving as Vice President.
- A candidate needs 20 members of Parliament from both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha to nominate them.
Why Do Some People Criticize the Vice President’s Role?
Even though the Vice President is a very important role, some people feel that it doesn’t come with enough power. Here are some reasons why:
- The role was inspired by the Vice President in the United States, but in India, the Vice President has fewer powers.
- When the President can’t do their job, the Vice President only acts as the President for a short time (around six months), while in the United States, the Vice President becomes the President.
- Removing the Vice President from office is easier than removing the President, which requires a special process called impeachment.
- The Vice President’s main job is to lead the Rajya Sabha, and they don’t have the same powers as the President, even though they hold an important title.
