During a Duleep Trophy match between India A and India D in Anantapur, Shreyas Iyer walked out to bat with something rarely seen in cricket—sunglasses. It’s not unusual for fielders to wear shades while patrolling the boundary, or even for spinners to keep them on while delivering the ball. However, seeing a batsman stride to the crease wearing sunglasses is a rare sight.
Shreyas Iyer Batting with Sunglasses on
As Iyer took his guard with the sun reflecting off his sunglasses, the commentators couldn’t help but take notice. Ashok Malhotra, a former India cricketer, and current member of the Cricket Advisory Committee, was quick to question, “Is it that bright to wear sunglasses?” He wasn’t alone in his skepticism, as fellow commentator and former leg-spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan chimed in, asking sarcastically if it was truly necessary for Iyer to be wearing them.
Despite the raised eyebrows and ongoing commentary, Iyer, with his signature confidence, continued to face the bowling. But his stint at the crease was short-lived. Iyer lasted just seven balls before being dismissed for a duck, caught at mid-on while trying to play an uppish on-drive off Khaleel Ahmed. His exit only added fuel to the conversation about whether the sunglasses had any role to play in his early departure.

WV Raman, a former India opener, offered a more neutral perspective: “Some players prefer to field with sunglasses on, some don’t. I guess it’s an individual choice.” His comment suggested that while unconventional, wearing sunglasses while batting is likely a personal preference rather than a factor that necessarily determines a player’s performance.
However, given Iyer’s quick dismissal, the timing of his gear choice became the talk of the town. While some cricketing purists argued that focus should be entirely on the game and not on experimental gear, others viewed it as Iyer simply expressing his personal style.
Shreyas Iyer is struggling for form
Beyond the sunglasses saga, the spotlight has also been on Iyer’s form. His performances in the Duleep Trophy have been underwhelming so far. Although he did manage to score a quickfire knock in the second innings of a previous game against India C, his consistency has been lacking. His first innings performance in Anantapur saw him dismissed for just 9 runs, flashing at a wide delivery.
This dry run has undoubtedly raised concerns, especially considering Iyer’s importance in India’s middle order. The stylish right-hander has been crucial in India’s limited-overs setup and is seen as a key player heading into upcoming international fixtures. However, a string of low scores in domestic cricket can add unnecessary pressure on a player ahead of critical assignments.
