India’s atheletes have lit 2024 Paris Paralympics with incredible achievements and inspiring performances – a record-breaking haul of 24 medals so far. 1972 Heidelberg Paralympics
Murlikant Petkar: India’s Paralympic journey began in 1972 with Murlikant Petkar, who won the country’s first-ever Paralympic gold in the men’s 50m freestyle swimming, setting a world record of 37.33 seconds.
1984 Stoke Mandeville/New York Paralympics
Joginder Singh Bedi: Bedi made history by becoming the first Indian para-athlete to win multiple medals at a single Games. He secured a silver in the men’s shot put L6, and bronze medals in both the men’s javelin L6 and men’s discus throw L6.
Bhimrao Kesarkar: Kesarkar added to India’s tally with a silver in the men’s javelin L6.
2004 Athens Paralympics
Devendra Jhajharia: Jhajharia won his first Paralympic gold in the men’s javelin F44/46, beginning his illustrious career.
Rajinder Singh Rahelu: Rahelu claimed a bronze in the men’s powerlifting 56kg category, marking another significant achievement for India.
2012 London Paralympics
Girish Nagarajegowda: Nagarajegowda won a silver medal in the men’s high jump F42, securing India’s sole medal at the London Games.

Devendra Jhajharia: Jhajharia made history again by winning his second gold medal in the men’s javelin F46.
